Have you ever sat around thinking about what you would do if you hit the lottery? Sure, everyone has, but do you even PLAY the lottery? Working for yourself is like that, except it’s much much scarier.
Okay, that wasn’t exactly the glowing endorsement I was going for, but the point is, you’ll never know something unless you try. If you’re sick of job hunting, or working in a thankless position, you might find yourself wondering what the hell the point of all this really is.
Not that we’re saying you should quit your job and starting selling music on the internet, but we do want you to know it’s an option.

Jonathan Coulton, famous on the internet for being a talented funny nerd, did just that. He quit his job as a software programmer and did what he loves. He generated buzz by giving away music for free and somehow made made money.
JoCo explains that it’s not a get rich quick scheme, but it’s been rewarding for him:
“I’m not getting rich exactly, but I make more money now than I did when I wrote software.”
His business model was based in the idea that he wanted to provide free music to people and be honest with them and in return they’d support him with donations or opt to buy his albums. The result? It worked:
“Now I sort of think of the whole engine as a special genetically engineered cow who eats music and poops money – I have no idea what’s going on in its gut, and I have the luxury of not really caring that much about the particulars.”
So if you’ve got a talent or something unique to offer, you won’t ever know what you can do unless you try.
