If you’ve gained anything from this site it’s that job hunting sucks. We know, we’re doing it too right now. And we’ve been bouncing around the “temp” idea. Here are the positive aspects to temping we’ve come up with. Feel free to add your own or shoot us down. We’d love to hear it.
1. Networking
The best way to get yourself out there is to meet people. If you’re surfting the net all day in your underwear you’re probably not meeting the right people. You might take a temp job doing administrative assistant duties, but meet someone who knows an opening for a Web Developer position. Just make sure people know what you’re good at and don’t miss an opportunity to be helpful with your skills. People will remember what you did for them.
2. References
Another benefit of putting yourself out there is you’re making good references. As much as your best friend would love to talk you up to a potential employee, if the closest thing to a professional relationship you have is that you slept with the same secretary, then they may not make the best reference. Temping can lead to real professional references, something that employers would rather see.
3. Money Motivates
If you’re broke, then pulling a paycheck may be enough to keep you from losing your mind. It’s really hard to stay confident and motivated to keep sending out resumes and cover letters when you feel down about money. It may seem strange, but we know from experience that being broke can lead to depression which leads to being less productive, which leads to less money. So making some money now will keep you motivated enough to look for more work.
4. Job Hunting Sucks
I think we’ve made it abundantly clear that we think job hunting sucks wang. One benefit of signing up with a temp service is that they look for positions for you. So if you feel like you’ve hit a brick wall, try it out and come back to the regular job search when you’re ready.
