Should Not Be That Much I Think

// June 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // Funny Job Listings

As we’ve explained before, animation generally uses 24 frames a second, but 2 of those frames are repeated which means it takes 12 drawings to create 1 second of animation. Let that sink in… 12 drawings for just one second. That means 1 minute of animation is 720 drawings. Now obviously some of those motions can be looped or repeated, but you’re still looking at a few hundred drawings.

That’s why it really makes us scratch our heads when someone offers $100 for what would be weeks of work.

From the listing:

“I am looking for a cartoonist. The project is for a music video.

For example: Tupac – Do for love video and the intro to the movie Grease.

I have an idea of what I want but not sure how to bring it alive so I would like to hire a cartoonist/animator that can help me to produce this vision.

Its just for a music video so should not be that much I think.

COntact me if you are interested.

Thanks,
LG.

* Compensation: 100 cash on delivery”

For $100 you might get some concept sketches or a character rotation, but I doubt that would even cover a storyboard for a 3-4 minute video. The amount of work that goes into planning an animation let alone creating one takes many hours and a lot of forethought. Something you clearly don’t have the capacity for.

By the way, a cartoonist draws the funnies. You’re definitely looking for an animator.

What A Great Sense Of Humor They Have!

// June 16th, 2009 // No Comments » // Funny Job Listings

Animation, even in Flash, takes a great deal of time and effort. A short 2 – 5 minute animation could be weeks and weeks worth of work for the animator depending on exactly how complicated and detailed that animation is.

From the listing:

NinjaPancakes.com is an Arts & Entertainment site that creates offbeat cartoon sequences. We want to create a 2-5 minute cartoon short using our characters and bizarre brand of humor. We need a savvy and fun Flash Animator to help us get this project off the ground.

Unfortunately no compensation offered (we have no income), except name credit once displayed on our website.

BWA HA HA HA!! They really do have an offbeat sense of humor!! I LOL’ed for hours after seeing the punchline!! They don’t HAVE money so why should they PAY anyone who works for them?!? It’s HILARIOUS!!

There’s No Such Thing As A Student Expert

// June 14th, 2009 // No Comments » // Funny Job Listings

When you need a job done on the cheap it’s not a terrible idea to hire a student who could use the experience and exposure. And if you need a job done well with a high level of professionalism then it’s a great idea to hire an expert. But you have to make the choice as to what’s more important to you.

From the listing:

“Flash Expert/Student Needed

Seeking a student with expertise in Flash and interested in project work. I have the concept, just need the technical skills to implement it. I would prefer a student interested in taking this on for class credit, but am willing to pay a reasonable fee if need be. Please respond if you’re interested.”

By definition, there’s just no such thing as as student with expertise. If you were an expert you wouldn’t need the schooling.

Also, as someone who’s taken several Flash classes in college I have to say that class projects are generally very specific. Usually with a specific scope like “design an animated greeting card with so many buttons, sound effects, and use a specific set of action scripts.” I’ve never had a class project that was just “find some a-hole on the Craigslist and design them a website.”

Who Doesn’t Like Sexy Cats?

// May 13th, 2009 // No Comments » // Funny Job Listings

Most of the postings we put up on this site make it here because they lack some basic understanding of what a talented individual should be paid. This listing isn’t your typical working fail, as the poster seems pretty clear on the fact that they’re going to have to spend some money to have a 30 second 3D animation done. Nevertheless, the listing made me laugh.

From the listing:

I am looking for someone to do a 30 second cartoon using my logo as the main character. What I would like is my character in a plumbing van getting a call on his cell phone, driving in Austin (maybe past the skyline) pulling up at a house to fix some plumbing. Sexy cat answers the door and shows him a spraying kitchen sink which he climbs under and fixes it, turns the faucet on to show her it works, he waves goodbye. and a closeup of him with a voiceover. I can send you a drawing of the sexy cat. I do want this to be a 3d cartoon with some personality. I also am very open to better ideas. Please send me your rates if hourly with some idea of time or a rough estimate for this job. I do realize you can’t give me an exact figure, i just need to know about how much i am looking at spending. Also please give me a link to some of your work. Thank you, Raquel

While very little is said about the main character of the animation, the poster offers to send a drawing of the “sexy cat” for referance. I think we all know who the REAL star of this animation is supposed to be. Some would say the poster’s priorities are off. I say they’re right on target. Props to sexy cats everywhere!

12 Frames Per Second x 10 Minutes = $150?

// May 3rd, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Funny Job Listings

Just 1 second of animation at 24 frames per second is 12 drawings (shot on 2s, meaning you show each frame twice). So 1 minute of animation is 720 drawings. Although, when you consider that some animation gets recycled it may be less. But it’s safe to say that if you’re animating a character, not a choppy flash pushpin joints kind of animation, but a real squash and stretch well animated character, 10 minutes of animation can be a whole helluva a lot of work. To give you an idea, my final project in my Animation 1 class was 1 minute and it took me over a week.

That said, $150 for 10 minutes of animation sounds like you’d be making maybe a few cents an hour if you’re lucky.

The listing in question:

Breif Description:

I need someone capable of creating an animation/cartoon of a “character” who has movement. I am picture this character being able to move similiar to the macarena dance. If you can do this and are qualified, please contact me. If not, please don’t waste your or my time..

The cartoon will be about 10 minutes. Very likely will become a series set. (Initially the budget is very small and tight – willing to partner / profit sharing with right partner.)

More details can only be provided with a signed NDA agreement.

Thanks…SJM

* Location: Georgia
* it’s NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
* Compensation: Less than $150 USD

Unless the ENTIRE 10 minutes is the Macarena on repeat, this isn’t a small project your pitching. And if it IS 10 minutes of the macarena then WTF dude…? Either way “less than” $150 will probably get you this:

angy-animation
