Petition Against Google’s Policy to Solicit Free Work from Artists

We the undersigned vow not to use Google services and products until their policies regarding the solicitation of free work from artists is changed. We feel that by asking artists to exchange services for exposure Google is encouraging other large companies to solicit free work which creates a negative impact on the design industry.

Tyler,
You people are retarded. Honestly. Get over it. Google asked the artists if they would like to create themes, stating nothing about monetary incentives. All the artists had to do was say no.

Matias Pigni,

xxxxxxxx,
This whole thing is just pathetic..!

Erika Hoffman,

xxxxxxxx,

Rebekah,

Josh Divine,

Rachel Shorten,
As an artist who works very hard on sales for art, I would like to say that I believe for you to attempt to exploit artists and make them create works and waste time for no pay is EXTREMELY disrespectful. Art has much more of a value, and we sell our souls to art. The least you could do is give the money to us in return and simple respect.

Business is business in any form. Respect is respect in any form. Practice both appropriately, next time you THINK of doing something like this.

xxxxxxxx,

valerie,
seriously this is just riduculus

xxxxxxxx,
Good job, Google.
Now you're on the list of the stupidest companies.

xxxxxxxx,
Looking at this and now understading the situation more clearly it makes me wonder why the hell they aren't paying up publicity IS nice and all but the only problem is does that give us money to pay the bills? Does that give us money to get us food and water? Does that give us money to raise the children that we may have? The simple answer would be no. Everyone has a place in this world and so do us Artists and Designers just like your designers designed how google would work...WE have the right as artists so WE should get paid for what we know weather its for a browser or not.

xxxxxxxx,
They really need to set a better example for small companies, who already seem to think they can get away with this. It's not okay at all.

xxxxxxxx,

xxxxxxxx,

xxxxxxxx,
Artists who are actually buying into this are making what I believe is an unwise decision. Sure, they get public exposure, but I would expect to be compensated for my hard work to impress the public. It's only fair. But no. Too many artists are being taken advatage of by big corporate companies who are practically up to their eyeballs in money and expect to never spend hardly a dime of it. That may be generalizing, but countless companies do have enough cowardice to manipulate hard-working middle- and lower-classman to satisfy their own greedy ends. This is a new low, even for Google, to even think of proposing something like this. It is out right stealing!

xxxxxxxx,

Smara,
...and this will just be the lull before the storm.. I suppose

Pay them, Google, they deserve it.

xxxxxxxx,
Given how much money they have, Google should stop being such cheapskates :/ It's incredibly unfair to the original artists

xxxxxxxx,
The audacity! They know that some artists will hand over artwork unawares, which is precisely why they're doing this. Artists have rights too! Google is such a mega corporation, you think they'd have some money to spare, but oh-no. Google, you're cheapskates.

Mirikun,

xxxxxxxx,
This is absolutely disgusting to me. An artist is on the same level as any intellectual, and we are already underpaid and hard pressed for money as it is.

murry lancashire,
Let this false precedent burn...

xxxxxxxx,
you ask for a service and then are surprised when money enters the equation? oh google that's just pathetic.

xxxxxxxx,
We need to live too.

xxxxxxxx,
Well, I won't be applying to work for them any time soon!

Kazza Moonshadow,
This is absolutely disgusting. You'd think they knew better. It's unreasonable and unbelievable for a big company such as Google to expect artists to work for free for them. I'm ashamed of using Gmail. Let artists have the money they deserve!

xxxxxxxx,
Failure. It is here. Why even bother with something so out of line? Small artists who only do commissions as a side job charge at least for a sketch, and you expect established artists to hand over their own polished art for FREE? I hope you can hear me facepalming, because damn, you deserve it.

xxxxxxxx,
Being an artist is a legit job so hiring one means paying. You'd expect better from GOOGLE.

xxxxxxxx,
Google, you make me sooooooooo glad I've always been a Yahoo! member. I've lost all respect I had for you. Fail.

Samantha Jones,
we work extremely hard on a lot of the things we do. art is work just like anything else and it should be recognized as such.

xxxxxxxx,
Absolutely stupid, they can afford to spend the money to pay their web designers, (who are artists) But the won't pay someone to draw/paint/design their stuff for them this shouldn't be allowed this company makes so much money on their own, they can afford to lose a few thousand.

xxxxxxxx,
Google, you have lost all respect from me.
Fail. Big time.

xxxxxxxx,
They make BILLIONS, but they can't pay the artists for their work? Can you say "greedy"?

xxxxxxxx,
Disgusting

Olivia Lartson,
I could say its bullshit and its crap and blah blah cliche blah blah. But they're really only hurting themselves and the industry. So I sign this petition to hopefully stop this before it gets out of hand.

Linda,
You get what you give, google.
Give nothing, get nothing. Simple as that.

OddOsprey,

xxxxxxxx,

xxxxxxxx,
It's absolute bullshit. Why should artists waste their time and talent and not get paid?

xxxxxxxx,
for the love of crap if anyone wanted to give google art to use for free they'd do it on their own...

Nancy Nuce,
How would you like it if you didn't get paid for your work?

xxxxxxxx,
This must be one of the most stupid things I've heard for quite a while. What the hell, Google.

Natalie Asplund,

Amanda Harrison,
Google...seriously...what the hell! I'm a budding artist and you're trying to stomp out my future by showing other companies your being cheap! Screw you.

Mii,
This is really an outrage. We work very hard to make art and they ask to have them for free?! They have no rights to even begin to ask us for free art!
They have millions but they cant spare even a nickel?! unacceptable

CherryDemonsgirl,
Google, that is just pethetic!

xxxxxxxx,
Unfair....

xxxxxxxx,

xxxxxxxx,

Meredith Dickerson,
Artists are to be respected, not undermined and under appreciated for their work. Screw this. Google, you're terrible.

Jason Barre,
I concur.

Keara,

Sara Ji,

Rachel Johnson (RayJ),
This is ridiculous. They can afford to pay artists for their work. What is with every big company thinking us artists are stupid enough to work for free?

Carly K.M Bell,

Deege,
This is blasphemy. I don't even do household chores for free.

ZeppTokyoASK,
Are you serious. Hell no. Especially from a shitty company that's making millions, and don't even have enough respect to offer paying the original artists for their work.

xxxxxxxx,

Jennifer Wolff,
This idea of having artists submit art to them for FREE is absolutely heinous and very disrespectful! No artist should give free works to those who already have millions.

xxxxxxxx,
Just because they rule most of the internet doesn't mean they can rule artists too!

xxxxxxxx,
Google shouldn't do this to artest that work hard just to get nothing.

xxxxxxxx,

Holly Hindle,
If artists weren't already having enough trouble protecting their original art/ideas/concepts on the internet a million dollar company decides to waste our time and squeeze unpaid work out of us? Shameless..

Amber Stufko,
i think free work of artists are unfair, to them its their hard work. It shouldn't be free, they should be paid for their unique art and work.

Alyshia,
This should not be supported whatsoever!

xxxxxxxx,

Aiyume,

Carolyn Klimek,

kim,
like hell i would give my work for free, those rich bastards can strove this policy up their ass.

Shana Young,
stupid google they should be told off, theyhave no right to ask us artists to do this

Kit Young,
No. I'm against unpaid internships, and I'm against stupidity like this. I wonder if Google would ask a team of programmers to build a new API for them, and just pay them with "recognition".

Brian Stauffer,

Scotto,
Just because it's Google, doesn't mean we should fawn and submit to their wishes.

Jenni Chasteen,
Personally I don't have a ton of exposure and even I would be reluctant to take off a week to design something for them for free. You can't pay your bills in flattery and attention.

whatthegeek,
If anyone can afford to pay their designers, it's google.
